TikTok: The Body Image Discussion

The Live Project was a research-based study. I followed the direction of social media and real-life problems, such as body image issues. It was a very interesting direction, being able to speak to TikTok users to find out their perspective was something I had never done before.

This project is close to my heart as it compares social media usage and the body image discussion. This is something that has been very prevalent in our culture, however, with new platforms constantly being developed, the discussion naturally broadens, and other avenues expand.

I decided to hold interviews with a variety of different people, either users of TikTok or not. I did this as I wanted to gain insights into social media users’ perspectives of how TikTok is understood. It had a positive effect on my Live Project as I was able to really ask why they felt like this problem was getting out of hand. I would have liked to construct more interviews as I think it could have had an even better outcome. I also think that holding group interviews would be a bonus, being in a group allows the participants to feel comfortable and can encourage each other.
The content analysis was something I’m not sure if I would reconsider. It was difficult to take data from a social media platform that has uploads every second. Much of content analysis is down to interpretation which I find to be difficult to prove in authenticity. I found myself analysing what comments meant and how the producers would have intended it to be. If I were to conduct content analysis again it would focus solely on the hashtags to find out the popular ways users get round the guidelines.

COVID-19 played a huge role in how the topic of discussion even came about. During lockdown, like many others, I had a lot more time to be scrolling on my phone as a distraction method from boredom. I had noticed many trends that were worrying, profiles demonstrating how to suppress your hunger was common. As well as that, ‘What I Eat in A Day’ was overwhelming my feed. I almost felt obliged to watch them, and for what reason? Boredom. However, over time it made me question my lifestyle choices and whether I was doing things right. I had nothing else to do other than think. I came to an understanding that these subliminal messages are harmful, and I wanted to know how others felt. I didn’t know what I was going to do with these ideas, but I knew that they needed to be explored by discussing with other TikTok users.
